Embroidery

Is a quick and easy way to create a personalized, unique item of clothing that is all one’s own. Unlike screen-printing, or airbrushing, which both require a lot of artistic skill and technical know-how, creating a simple embroidery design is as easy as creating an outline drawing and either taking it to a local embroidery shop or submitting a digitized image to an online embroidery house. These types of homemade embroidery designs can be either stitched directly onto an item, or made into a patch, which can then be either ironed or stitched onto the garment.

When trying to come up with an idea for a successful embroidered design, one of the most important things to remember is that simper is better. Unlike airbrushed or screen printed designs, embroidered images are made up of hundreds of threads. While this gives such designs their wonderful, textured feel, it also means that there is not as much room to play around with complex shading and design. Of course this is not to say that one cannot achieve a high level of complexity in embroidered designs, but to do so would take a lot of time (and therefore, money). As such, it is best to think in blocks of solid colors. The use of contrasting shades and thick outlines can add to a design’s appeal, by ensuring that it stands out from the garment. (more…)
